Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted to improve students’ learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) at SMPN 1 Lubuk Alung through the implementation of Project Based Learning (PjBL) integrated with Minangkabau local wisdom. The study was motivated by the low level of student engagement and limited contextual understanding of Islamic values in daily life. The research applied a collaborative approach between the teacher and researcher, conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through tests, observations, field notes, and student interviews. The findings showed that the use of PjBL with local wisdom projects, such as exploring the philosophy “Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah,” significantly increased student motivation, participation, and achievement in IRE lessons. In Cycle I, the majority of students reached the minimum mastery criteria, but weaknesses in collaboration and time management were identified. Improvements were made in Cycle II, resulting in a higher percentage of students achieving excellent learning outcomes and demonstrating stronger character values. The study concludes that integrating PjBL with cultural values not only enhances academic performance but also strengthens students’ identity and moral awareness in the context of Islamic education.
