Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) aims to improve students' understanding of the development of Islam in Indonesia using the Cooperative Learning model at SMP Negeri 1 Lubuk Sikaping. The study was conducted over two cycles, where students were grouped to collaborate in discussions, research, and presentations related to the history and spread of Islam in Indonesia. The cooperative approach encouraged active engagement and fostered teamwork, allowing students to share perspectives and learn from one another. Data was collected through observations, interviews, and analysis of student work, focusing on their understanding of key events in the development of Islam in Indonesia. The findings show that cooperative learning significantly improved students' knowledge and critical thinking regarding the historical and cultural impact of Islam on Indonesian society. Additionally, students demonstrated increased participation and enthusiasm during lessons. The research highlights the importance of cooperative learning in making complex historical topics more accessible and engaging for students, promoting deeper comprehension and active learning. This study recommends using cooperative learning strategies in history and social studies to enhance students' collaborative skills and historical understanding.
