Abstract

This classroom action research aims to improve students’ conceptual understanding in the subject of Science and Social Studies (IPAS) through the implementation of the Discovery Learning model in Grade V at MIS Nurul Salam Lewoleba. The study was motivated by the low level of students’ comprehension of IPAS material, particularly in the theme of interaction between living beings and their environment, as shown in the results of previous learning evaluations. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 24 fifth-grade students. Data were collected using observation sheets for teacher and student activities, conceptual understanding tests, and field notes. The results showed that the application of the Discovery Learning model significantly improved students’ understanding of concepts. In the first cycle, 58.3% of students reached the minimum passing grade (KKM), which increased to 87.5% in the second cycle. Student learning activities also improved, particularly in observing, questioning, reasoning, and drawing conclusions. In conclusion, the Discovery Learning model proved to be effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding in IPAS. It is recommended as an alternative strategy to promote active and meaningful learning in Islamic elementary schools (MI).
