Abstract
This classroom action research aims to improve students' understanding of zakat through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The research was conducted in Class XI of MAS Al Mu'awanah Sidoarjo over two learning cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Initial observations revealed that students had difficulty understanding the concept, types, and calculations of zakat due to the use of conventional, lecture-based methods. The PBL model was applied to encourage students to solve real-life problems related to zakat distribution, zakat fitrah, and zakat mal through group discussions and inquiry-based learning. Data were collected using observation sheets, student worksheets, and learning achievement tests. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ engagement and comprehension. They became more active in discussions, asked questions, and were able to apply zakat knowledge to practical situations. By the end of the second cycle, the majority of students reached the expected learning outcomes. This study concludes that the PBL model is an effective strategy for enhancing students’ understanding of zakat and can be integrated into Islamic education to promote critical thinking and contextual learning.
