Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) aims to explore the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model to enhance students' understanding of the development of Islam in Indonesia at SMPN 2 Batang Anai. The study was conducted over two cycles, focusing on the integration of real-world context into the learning process, where students connect theoretical knowledge with their own experiences. Data were collected through classroom observations, student interviews, and assessment results to evaluate changes in students' engagement, understanding, and academic performance. The results indicate that the use of the CTL model significantly improved students' participation, critical thinking, and their ability to link historical events to contemporary issues. Moreover, this approach helped students understand the cultural and religious context of Islam in Indonesia, fostering deeper appreciation and connection to the subject matter. The findings suggest that contextual learning strategies can enhance the relevance of the material and create more meaningful learning experiences. This study concludes that the CTL model is an effective method for teaching Islamic history and culture, particularly in fostering a connection between students' daily lives and the subject matter.
