Abstract

This classroom action research aims to improve early reading skills of Group B children through the implementation of picture and word matching activities at RA Lukmanul Hakim. The research was conducted in two cycles using the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The background of this study is the low ability of children to recognize and connect words with their corresponding objects, which affects their readiness to enter formal reading stages. The picture and word matching activity is designed to stimulate children’s visual recognition, memory, and word association. By matching images with printed words, children become more familiar with letter shapes, word forms, and their meanings. This approach is intended to make learning to read more meaningful and enjoyable. The results showed a significant improvement in children’s early reading abilities. In the first cycle, only 48% of children reached the expected developmental level. After improvement in the second cycle, 84% of the children successfully matched pictures and words with minimal assistance. Children were more enthusiastic, focused, and confident during literacy activities. In conclusion, the picture and word matching method is an effective strategy to enhance early reading readiness in young learners
