Abstract
This study investigates the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving mathematical understanding and critical thinking skills among fourth-grade students at MI Miftahus Shibyan Mijen, Semarang. PBL is a student-centered approach that involves presenting students with real-world problems to solve, encouraging them to apply mathematical concepts in practical situations. The purpose of this research is to examine how PBL can enhance students' comprehension of mathematical concepts, particularly in topics such as fractions, measurements, and basic operations, while simultaneously fostering their critical thinking abilities. Data was collected through classroom observations, student performance assessments, and interviews with teachers. The results indicate that students who participated in PBL activities showed increased engagement in mathematics lessons, improved problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Teachers also observed that students were more motivated and able to apply their mathematical knowledge in real-life scenarios. This study suggests that PBL is an effective pedagogical strategy to enhance both conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills in mathematics education, encouraging students to actively participate in their learning process.
