Enhancing Civic Education through Problem-Based Learning at MIS Baiturrahman: Fostering Critical Thinking and Social Responsibility
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to improve students' understanding and engagement in Civics Education (PPKN) at MIS Baiturrahman through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. Civics Education plays a crucial role in shaping students' character, social awareness, and critical thinking skills. However, traditional teaching methods often fail to actively engage students and develop these essential skills. PBL is a student-centered approach that involves presenting real-world problems to students, encouraging them to collaborate, think critically, and apply their knowledge to solve complex issues. This research uses a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles, with 5th-grade students as participants. Data was collected through observations, student assessments, and interviews with both teachers and students. The results show that the implementation of PBL significantly enhanced students' involvement in PPKN lessons. Students became more motivated and actively participated in problem-solving discussions. Additionally, their ability to connect civic concepts to real-life situations improved, demonstrating that PBL can make Civics Education more relevant and meaningful. Teachers also reported positive changes in classroom dynamics, with increased student collaboration and independent thinking. The study concludes that PBL is an effective teaching model to improve students' understanding of Civics Education, as it fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and a deeper connection to social issues. It is recommended that MIS Baiturrahman and other schools consider adopting this model to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in Civics Education.
