Enhancing Student Engagement and Understanding in IPAS through Project-Based Learning at MI Al-Abror Tegalarum: A Classroom Action Research

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing students' engagement and understanding of Integrated Science, Social Studies, and Civics (IPAS) at MI Al-Abror Tegalarum. IPAS is an essential subject that combines scientific, social, and civic knowledge, but students often find it challenging to connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications. Traditional teaching methods, which rely heavily on lectures and textbooks, may fail to engage students actively and hinder deeper understanding. Project-Based Learning, which encourages students to work on real-life projects and apply knowledge in practical ways, has been shown to foster critical thinking, collaboration, and enhanced learning outcomes. This research investigates how PBL can improve students' grasp of IPAS concepts and motivate them to participate more actively in class activities.


The study follows a Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology, conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection, allowing for continuous refinement of teaching practices. Data collection includes student assessments, observations of student participation, and interviews with teachers to evaluate the impact of PBL on students' understanding of IPAS. The research specifically focuses on students' ability to apply IPAS knowledge in project tasks and their engagement in the learning process.


The findings suggest that PBL significantly improves students' understanding of IPAS concepts and enhances their problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills. Students exhibited higher motivation and active participation, demonstrating a deeper connection to the subject matter. These results highlight the potential of Project-Based Learning as an effective instructional strategy for promoting student engagement and understanding in IPAS education.
